The enormous growth in the popularity and consequent sales of four wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles continues to refute the claims of the vocal minority critical of the genre. Sales of these vehicles is running at about 17% of all vehicles sold and, while most of these will never see an unsealed road, let alone a dirt track, many buyers new to four wheel drive vehicles do want to expand their driving horizons beyond the bitumen.

One of the recommendations of the report was that 4WD and caravans should have special licences. Although there may be some basis in logic for this requirement the same logic would lead to the inescapable conclusion that any vehicle other than a sedan may also require a special licence. For instance driving a delivery van or small tip truck or other such vehicle should also require a special licence. In fact the committee itself supported this logic when it recommended the banning of driving high powered vehicles for novices.

In recent months the media has once again put the spotlight on four-wheel drive vehicles. The catalyst for this attention was an accident in which a 4WD overturned killing four members of the one family returning from a holiday. The accident happened on the Hume Highway near Wagga Wagga in NSW
The media, assisted by the NRMA, focused attention on the apparent ease with which four-wheel drives can tip over, quoting American reports supporting this claim.
