4WD Clubs News FAQs (frequently-asked questions)
Category: Main -> Web Site Stuff sub-categories
QuestionAnswerWhat were the design criteria for this site? The design principles for the 4WD NSW&ACT web site were based on the following priorities:
1. Association admin functions (clubs registrar, contact details, administrative instructions)
2. Ease of publication of site content - information owner empowered & minimal dependency on webmaster.
3. Association information to the 4WD driving public via multiple channels:
- news articles and news archives
- event calendar
- forum discussions
- FAQ pages
- web links & file downloads
4. Ability, to control access to the Association's intellectual property on a "need to know" basis.
Everything is a compromise, especially when it is developed with zero budget. The best option which we could find at the time was a content management system called PostNuke. With a few modules added in like the BBS, Gallery and Calendar, this provided us with the engine to build on and achieve the design goals listed above with minimal effort. To prototype the original site we used the default postnuke theme. It worked OK so we kept it. (Themes define the look and feel including menu size.)
We ended up with a lot of content - over 5000 pages at the moment, and a typical daily readership of between 120 to 200 unique patrons (total per month averaging around 4000). Feel free to check the site statistics at http://4wdnsw.org/stats/
This type of site can be as complex or as simple as you want.
