Packsaddle Station Track Maintenance - Sep 07

We all left Dave and Martina's place in Greystanes at around 7am heading for Canberra and then onto the Monaro Hwy. to Bredbo. We stopped at Pheasant's Nest servo for a bacon and egg roll and a top up of the good stuff (diesel). I have never seen this place so busy, just about everyone in Sydney was heading away for the APEC weekend, all except the professional demonstrators and the poor old police who were stuck in town keeping the lunatic fringe at bay. We arrived at the Bredbo pub just on 12 noon, ahh time for a refreshing ale and some lunch, then onward into the hills at the rear of the pub.

Any Excuse for a Fraser Island Trip

Fraser Island - long known as a mecca for travellers from all over Australia, not to mention the backpackers. But for South East Queenslanders it is our backyard. Many of us here in the bottom corner of heaven try to get over to the island whenever we can and our kids much the same as we were when young can’t wait between visits.

VEAC Closing Access to the Murray

It is such a sad day when VEAC release another report that totally opposes recreational use of public land for all Victorian's. Four Wheel Drive Australian's need to get just a little motivated to complain that the consultation process has been a farce with none of the majority recreational interests being picked up. Quite the contrary they have been excluded.

Access to the Murray will be closed, in a figurative sense. Camping restricted, camp fires banned, four wheel driving eliminated. That is just as it effects our recreation. Consider horse riding, fishing, sporting shooting, trail and mountain bike riding and the like.

AUSTRALIAN 4WD MONTHLY CLIFFHANGER 9-13th July

THERE was movement at Cootawundi Station, for the word had passed around
That the ute from old Greenie had won his way,
And had joined the wild bush ute of Scanlon — they were worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
All the tried and noted drivers from the stations near and far
Had blasted down the river bed overnight,
For the bushmen love hard driving where the wild stages are,
And the challenge class rig snuffs the battle with delight.

That's how Banjo Patterson would see the Cliffhanger ....

What you need is any form of basic off road / all terrain vehicle, a GPS and a sense of adventure (a sense of humour will go a long way too). BYO a family - even someone else's family will do.

Diesel fuel, Winter & the High Country

Diesel fuel vehicles may have problems this year in extremely cold conditions. Due to changes instigated by the EPA effective January 2006 the fuel companies have altered their diesel fuel mix and the ‘freeze level’ [temperature where the wax in the fuel solidifies causing the fuel to coagulate in the lines, fuel filters and fuel pump] has risen. Fuel purchased in Sydney is now ‘freezing’ just below zero degree Celsius, whereas the fuel purchased in Berridale and Jindabyne has had a proportion of heating oil added in to lower the ‘freeze’ temperature so that local machinery, i.e. snow groomers, graders, buses etc are not affected by sub zero temperatures.
